# How to Become Indispensable in an AI-Driven World — with Addison Watson

## Value Add Is the Minimum: Addison Watson on Becoming Indispensable in an AI-Driven World

**In this post:** *As AI absorbs the knowledge professionals once billed for, ClickFunnels Chief Partnership Officer and General Counsel Addison Watson argues that relationships are the insurance policy. He explains why value add is now the minimum and how small, thoughtful acts of overdelivering make you hard to replace.*

During a routine call, a business partner mentioned that his daughter loved ballet. Addison Watson made a note, checked whether Disney on Ice was coming anywhere near the family, and found a show in Dallas. He sent a gift card with a simple message: no obligation, but here it is if you want it.

The partner took his daughter. He later told Watson it was the coolest thing ever, and that it was all she would talk about.

Watson, Chief Partnership Officer and General Counsel at ClickFunnels, told the story on *Activating Greatness*, the leadership podcast from Velocity Advisory Group. He is a lawyer with more than $1 billion in completed transactions, and his argument is that a gesture like that one is now part of the job. As AI absorbs the expertise professionals once charged for, the relationships they build are what make them hard to replace.

## The Knowledge Lane Is Closing

Watson described how quickly the ground moved. Eighteen months earlier, he said, AI was "that thing that can do the thing, but it does it wrong." Six months after that, it could handle a little work but "still can't pass the bar exam." Now the calculus has flipped. "Today, if you're not incorporating AI into your practice, you're doing all of your clients or your business a disservice," he said.

That shift is the top fear among knowledge workers such as lawyers and accountants, who have long earned good money for knowing something other people did not. Watson's warning to professionals who think a credential protects them is blunt. "If you just treat yourself as this person who does the work and doesn't build the relationship, doesn't lead from the front, you're going to get left behind every single time," he said.

His own career shows the alternative. His roles moved from director of legal to head of legal, then to general counsel, and finally to Chief Partnership Officer and General Counsel. He credits the climb to long-standing relationships. It is rare, he noted, to see a company's lawyer out mingling "instead of just being locked in the closet with no windows."

He opened by calling himself fully irreplaceable, then trimmed the claim. Nobody is. But relationships layered on top of expertise make replacing him far harder, and "really difficult to do it with just one person."

## Let AI Do the Dishes

Watson does not want professionals to resist AI. He wants them to hand it the work they never wanted. "If AI was doing all of our laundry and dishes, nobody would be complaining about AI," he said. Yet many people still insist on building spreadsheets by hand instead of connecting their email, files, and Slack into a knowledge base that works for them.

Host Alec McChesney offered his own example: prospect research that took him nine hours a week in 2021 now takes 30 minutes. Watson put the payoff in terms any professional who bills by the hour understands. Save time, spend it earning more, and your average dollar per hour climbs.

The hours AI returns pay off only if you spend them with people. Christine Miller makes a related case for [keeping humanity at work in the era of AI](https://coaching.velocityadvisorygroup.com/activating-greatness-podcast-episodes/ep-38-leading-in-the-era-of-ai-christine-miller).

## Relationships Without a Ledger

If relationships are a competitive advantage, the obvious risk is treating them like transactions. Watson rejects that. "Every little investment you make doesn't have to be a business investment in and of itself," he said. People who look out for number one every time, he added, never develop the right relationships.

The commitment is real because the cost is real. Watson describes himself as naturally quiet, someone who likes a small group of friends. He works from home, where his son is 30 seconds away, and time with his wife and son is his favorite thing. Giving up those nights to meet partners in person signals something a video call cannot. "It's pretty hard to eat dinner over Zoom," he said.

Not every trip pays off. Watson has flown across the country for dinner and come home with nothing. He counts it as learning. Five years later, that same person may call and want to have dinner again. Velocity co-founder Dan Silvert has made the broader case that [relationships drive culture](https://coaching.velocityadvisorygroup.com/activating-greatness-podcast-episodes/ep-3-the-human-advantage-dan-silvert).

### The Overdeliver Checklist

Use it to hand busywork to AI, track the details that matter to your clients and partners, and plan one unexpected gesture each week.

## Overdeliver Past the Expectation

At his former law firm, a practice of about 250 attorneys, Watson was taught to always tell clients how he was a value add. Working with ClickFunnels leader Russell Brunson changed that view. Adding value, Watson said, is the bare minimum. Brunson often asks from the stage, "Is it cool if I overdeliver?" Watson turned the question into his partnership strategy: what can he do that people are not expecting?

The answer rarely involves money. "It's not just a big fancy steak dinner," he said. "It's thoughtfulness." That means listening for what someone loves, remembering it, and bringing it up two years later when they assume you forgot.

> "It's a great thing to be a value add, but that's the minimum expectation now."
>
> *Addison Watson, Chief Partnership Officer and General Counsel, ClickFunnels*

He has little use for the old formula of underpromising and overdelivering, either. His version is to "promise the expectation at the very minimum plus a little, and then overdeliver as much as you can on top of that."

## Lead From the Ground Floor

Watson's leadership habits start at home. When he has a 5 a.m. flight, he sets up the coffee before he leaves at 3 so his wife has it waiting. "You can be a leader by serving," he said.

The most underrated leadership skill, in his view, is humility: never ask someone to do a job you would not do yourself. He learned it from his wife, who managed a retail store while he was in law school and always cleaned up messes herself rather than assign them to employees who earned less.

The same humility shapes what he wants great leaders to stop doing. Micromanaging and control keep a team dependent on one person. Make sure your people are leveling up too, he said, and do not pull up the ladder behind yourself.

## Key Takeaways

1. **Expertise alone no longer protects you.** AI now handles much of the knowledge work professionals once billed for. Relationships layered on that expertise make you far harder to replace.
2. **Give AI the busywork.** Automate the tasks you never wanted to do, then reinvest the hours in face-to-face conversations and problem solving.
3. **Invest without keeping score.** Not every meeting or trip needs a business return. People can tell when you are only there to get something.
4. **Treat value add as the floor.** Listen for what people care about, remember it, and surprise them with something thoughtful they did not expect.
5. **Serve the people you lead.** Humility means taking on any task yourself and developing your team instead of controlling it.

HOW VELOCITY HELPS

### Velocity DISC Assessments & Training

Watson builds trust by listening closely, remembering what matters to people, and adapting how he shows up for each partner. Velocity's DISC Assessments & Training gives teams a shared language for those differences through the Birds framework of Eagle, Parrot, Dove, and Owl. Leaders and client-facing professionals learn how they communicate, how others prefer to be approached, and how to build stronger working relationships in an era when human connection is the advantage AI cannot copy.

## The Takeaway: Respond Like a Leader

The best leadership advice Watson ever received came from his ninth-grade biology teacher, Tate Fisher, who shared a line from former Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz: "Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you respond to it." You can put yourself in the right position your whole life, Watson said, and it still will not always work out.

That applies to AI as much as anything. Professionals cannot control how fast the technology changes what their expertise is worth. They can control how they respond: adopt the tools, invest in people without keeping score, and overdeliver. Leaders who do that will be the ones others want in the room.
