# From the NFL to Business: Authenticity, Small Habits, and Leadership — with Kellen Mond

## Remain Yourself: Kellen Mond on What the NFL Taught Him About Authentic Leadership

**In this post:** *Former NFL quarterback Kellen Mond was told he had to become a yeller to lead. He studied the best quarterbacks in the league, learned that great performers remain themselves, and now applies that lesson, plus a 10-out-of-10 standard, to building a fine art business.*

Before the NFL draft, the advice came from every direction. Kellen Mond was a quiet quarterback, and the people around him said that had to change.

"There are a lot of people in my ear because of my personality style of being a little bit more on the reserved side, not this big yeller type person," Mond said on *Activating Greatness*, the leadership podcast from Velocity Advisory Group. The message was blunt: To succeed in the league, he had to get on guys, yell at guys, and stop being "this monotone type of person."

So as a rookie with the Minnesota Vikings, Mond ran an experiment. He had already studied his own teammates. On game days, he watched the other team's quarterback: Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady, and Matthew Stafford. He studied how they warmed up, how they carried themselves, and their body language in the middle of a game.

Late in the season, he reached a conclusion. "All of the things that I was told are definitely not true," he said.

## The Advice That Did Not Hold Up

Mond played at Texas A&M, was drafted by the Vikings in 2021, and spent time with the Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts, and New Orleans Saints. He now works as a fine art photographer and artist. Across every stop, he has watched leaders try to be someone they are not.

In Minnesota, he never saw veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins yell at teammates. Adam Thielen, then a 10-year veteran, played with passion but did not do what Mond had been told great players do.

Confused, he called a former professor, a sports psychologist at Texas A&M, and walked him through what he had seen. The answer reframed his career. The best performers in the NFL and in sports, the psychologist told him, are the ones who find ways to remain themselves.

## Evolve Without Becoming Someone Else

Remaining yourself does not mean standing still. Aaron Rodgers at 21 is not the same player near 40, Mond noted, and Lamar Jackson has refined his throwing form. Those changes, he said, are "evolutions that come with maturity," not changes made because something is missing.

The trap is spending energy on an identity that is not yours. "You sort of spend so many mental calories trying to figure out what's the best way to play instead of just going out and performing," he said.

His biggest growth came under a coach who refused to force a style on him. Drew Petzing, his quarterback coach in Cleveland, told a room of very different quarterbacks that he could not tell them how to be comfortable. His only goal was to get them playing in rhythm, on time, and with success. "That's really where I saw my largest growth," Mond said.

For managers, the parallel is direct: Build the system, then put each person in a position to succeed as themselves. Brooke Page-Thompson made a similar case for [authenticity as the root of culture](https://coaching.velocityadvisorygroup.com/activating-greatness-podcast-episodes/ep-2-the-culture-shift-brooke-page-thompson).

## Leadership Is the Way You Walk in the Building

Mond describes leadership as an atmosphere you create, not a title you hold. In the NFL, the general manager outranks the head coach, but the head coach is the one speaking to 70 to 90 players every day. One flat morning can plant a thought in a player's mind that he can take the day off.

"A lot of times it's just about the way you walk in the building every single day," he said.

He watched Kevin O'Connell bring that energy to Minnesota after Mike Zimmer's firing. O'Connell's offensive mind is strong, Mond said, but "when it comes to leadership, that dude is born to teach."

## No Such Thing as 9.5 Out of 10

Football taught Mond that you never know which play will cost you the game. His best leadership advice follows from that lesson. "The way you do small things is the way you do all things," he said.

Coaches praised his detailed, organized playbook notes. Now he holds his art business to the same standard. "There's no such thing as 9 out of 10, 9.5 out of 10," he said. "I require 10 out of 10 work, the crisp details."

A detail missed at a lower level can surface in front of executives or clients who expect quality. Effort at 90%, he said, "a lot of times it's the same thing as 50%. It's the same thing as 25%." Mile 20 made a similar case for [discipline and consistency](https://coaching.velocityadvisorygroup.com/activating-greatness-podcast-episodes/ep-27-consistency-and-discipline-mile-20-podcast).

Small things include how you treat people. Cousins, Mond recalled, would call newly signed practice-squad players into the quarterback room and greet them by name, already knowing their college and background. "He knows more about you than you know him," Mond said. For Mond, the ability to care is the most underrated leadership skill.

## Bend the Tradition, Keep the Person

Remaining yourself is not the same as refusing to change how you work. The leadership habit Mond wants to end is the belief that one size fits all. "Everyone's job in this world is to continue to elevate, progress, and a lot of times to take your spot," he said.

He pointed to Klint Kubiak, his offensive coordinator as a rookie, who ran a traditional offense in 2021 and lost his job when the staff was fired. Kubiak then learned under other offensive minds in Denver and San Francisco before winning a Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator, Mond said. He kept his foundation and evolved.

The lesson is to bend tradition, not break it. Bending, Mond said, is how you "test what works out there." Some tests fail. More succeed, and successes compound.

He now applies that thinking to the art world, where he occupies an unusual space: an emerging artist with a celebrity story. Some collectors avoid celebrity art; others avoid emerging artists. Mond has learned when to lean on the quarterback story and when to simply be an artist. Either way, he said, "this is my journey, this is my story, that's who I am."

## Key Takeaways

1. **Remain yourself.** The best performers make small adjustments as they mature, but they do not trade their identity for someone else's style.
2. **Lead with the atmosphere you create.** How you walk into the building every day signals what is acceptable for the people who follow you.
3. **Treat every small thing like the play that decides the game.** A 90% effort often reads the same as 50% to the people who depend on your work.
4. **Show people you care before they ask.** Learning a new team member's background before you meet them builds trust on day one.
5. **Bend tradition to keep growing.** "This is how we've always done it" breeds complacency. Test new approaches without abandoning your foundation.

HOW VELOCITY HELPS

### Velocity Leadership Development

Mond's growth came when a coach stopped forcing a style on him and helped him perform as himself. Velocity's year-long Leadership Development program, including Emerging Leaders, follows the 70/20/10 model, combining cohort coaching, reinforcement calls, and a Velocity Coach paired with every participant. Rising leaders build self-awareness, define the standards they want to set, and learn to lead through their natural strengths instead of borrowing a personality that does not fit.

## The Takeaway: Discipline Travels

Mond believes athletes often thrive in business because they spend a decade or two refusing to accept failure. The work ethic and the intangibles stay with them. "If you can learn an NFL playbook as a receiver or a quarterback, I think you can learn most things and most systems in life," he said.

His own move from quarterback to artist proves the point. The surface skill changed. The standard underneath it did not. Leaders who want lasting results should look for the same thing in their people and in themselves: an identity worth keeping and the discipline to bring it to every small task.
