# Preserving Legacy, Embracing Change: Leading a Family Business Across Generations

As I sit in the [George Nakashima Reading Room](https://michenerartmuseum.org/exhibition/nakashima-reading-room/) at the Michener Museum in Doylestown, PA, my thoughts turn to the essence of family and family business. Nakashima was one of the most prolific wood artisans in the United States, crafting furniture that was both functional and deeply artistic. As his career evolved, his daughter, Mira, and son, Kevin, carried his traditions forward through [George Nakashima Woodworkers](https://nakashimawoodworkers.com/philosophy/history-team/). Though their business is much smaller in size, revenue, and generational complexity than many I work with, the themes it represents — legacy, craftsmanship, and the delicate balance between tradition and evolution — are universal in family businesses.

I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be welcomed into boardrooms, homes, living rooms, dining rooms, family gatherings, annual retreats, and trusted discussions where the stakes feel immense. I am often called in moments of transition: when succession looms on the horizon, and when multiple generations recognize the need to get it right, but in their own way. At times, I am asked to help clarify decision-making that will ensure that assets built over two or three generations maintain their meaning and value for the future.

What makes working with family businesses unique? In a paradoxical way, both nothing and everything.

## **The “Nothing” and “Everything” of Family Business**

At its core, running a business is running a business. Profitability, market adaptation, customer service, people management — these are the fundamentals that every business must master, family-owned or not. That’s the “nothing.” Keep the company relevant, take care of employees, serve customers well, and, in theory, all should be fine.

The “everything” is where family enters the equation. It’s different when the business is not just a job but a defining element of identity. When everyone in town knows your last name, when stories of your grandparents’ sacrifices are embedded into the community’s fabric, when expectations — spoken and unspoken — follow you at every turn.

The business becomes the reference point for conversations, the nexus for determining fairness, the proving ground for personal worth, and the great unifier or divider of family relationships. Multigenerational family businesses offer incredible market advantages, but they also present ever-evolving challenges that demand clarity, communication, and a willingness to navigate complexity.

## **Legacy, Stewardship, and the Evolution of Leadership**

I have had the privilege of working with some of the most impactful family businesses in America: organizations that have built communities, created opportunities, and provided livelihoods for generations. Over the course of my career, spanning nonprofit, for-profit, public, private, private equity-backed, and multigenerational family businesses, I have seen firsthand what makes these enterprises endure.

I did not set out to specialize in family business, but in many ways, this work chose me as much as I gravitated toward it. My career has taken me through the worlds of executive leadership, team performance, high-stakes decision-making, and even early experiences as a therapist; each of these disciplines shaping how I approach the unique challenges families face in business together. I am profoundly grateful for every family member and every family business that has allowed me to be part of their journey. I have learned from each interaction, and the privilege of guiding these transitions is never lost on me.

## **The Nakashima Parallel: Tradition and Evolution in Family Business**

Which brings me back to Nakashima. His work was meticulous, deeply rooted in tradition, and guided by an uncompromising commitment to craftsmanship. His children did not seek to replicate him, they sought to honor his artistry while evolving it for the future.

This is the heart of family business.

Senior generations want the next generation to understand what it took to build the business, the values that created its foundation, and the responsibility of stewardship. Younger generations, in turn, want to honor that legacy, but they also seek the respect and trust to adapt — to ensure the business remains relevant in a world that is constantly shifting. They don’t want to fail or disappoint, but they also know that simply maintaining the past is not enough for the future.

The most successful family businesses I’ve worked with embrace this dynamic. They recognize that legacy is not about preservation alone; it is about carrying forward meaning while having the courage to evolve. In the best of these businesses, tradition and innovation are not opposing forces but interwoven threads, just like the grain in a masterfully crafted Nakashima table sitting in front of me, telling a continuous story across generations.
